How Can Dog Ear Mites Be Prevented

Dog Mites / Tuesday, March 6th, 2018

The presence of ear mites is a very painful and upsetting condition for your pet. Pets suffering from this problem are often irritable and less playful. As a good pet owner, you wouldn’t want to subject your dog to such an ordeal. You should want to make sure that your pet is always happy and free from any diseases.

Here are tips that you can follow to make sure that your dog won’t suffer from ear mites:

  1. Know which dogs your pet associates with.

Keep in mind that ear mites are highly contagious. If your pet is always out and associating itself with other dogs suffering from ear mites, it may go home one day scratching its ears incessantly. As much as possible, don’t let your dog out in the neighborhood alone. Also, never lose sight of your dog when taking it out for a walk.

  2. Observe proper hygiene and grooming.

A well-kept dog is not as likely to develop any type of disease. Grooming your dog professionally may cost you some money. However, you can always groom your pet on your own. Start by giving your dog adaily bath. Inspect the ears of your dog regularly.
You don’t really have to clean the ears of your dog, because they usually clean themselves. Just make sure that there isn’t any debris or dirt present in the folds and in the deeper part of the ear.

  3. Keep your dog’s kennel and surroundings clean.

Cleanliness doesn’t end with your dog. Like you, you want to live and sleep in a very comfortable place. As such, change your dog’s bedding regularly and wash its kennel as frequently as possible.

  4. Don’t skip regular visits to the vet.

Prevention is always better than cure. If you take your dog to its regular checkups, you can eliminate the risk of sustaining undiagnosed health problems. If you can’t possibly take your pet to the vet monthly, try to do so every two months. Make sure that your dog gets the right nutrition and attention it requires.

  5. Spend time with your dog.

Your dog can’t tell you where it hurts or when something is bothering him. Pet owners should be responsible enough to know immediately if there’s something different with the way their dog is acting. By spending adequate time with your pet, it will be easier for you to check for diseases and provide the necessary cure for your dog right away.
